ai weiwei: sunflower seeds

On the final day of my last Shanghai trip, I received a small bag of these sunflower seeds as a souvenir from my friends, Kiki and Vincent.  So… what’s so special about these sunflower seeds? These sunflower seeds were actually a very tiny portion of the eight million total of seeds from the Chinese artist, Ai Weiwei‘s art installation, “Sunflower Seeds 2010″, at the Tate Modern Museum in London.

The seeds are all made out of porcelain and every single seed was individually sculpted and painted by Chinese craft workers commissioned by Ai Weiwei.

Here’s a video I found on youtube that shows the artist Ai Weiwei explaining his concept and his message behind this incredible art installation.
